Smithtown Residents Rally Against Proposed Freight Yard in Kings Park
The Townline Association, a civic group representing residents in the Smithtown area, has been actively opposing the proposed construction of a freight rail terminal by Townline Rail Terminal, LLC, an affiliate of CarlsonCorp. The project aims to build a 5,000-foot rail spur connecting to the Long Island Rail Road's Port Jefferson Branch, facilitating the transport of incinerated ash and construction debris. The proposed site is near Pulaski and Town Line Roads in Kings Park, adjacent to residential neighborhoods.
Community concerns include potential health risks from diesel exhaust and incinerated ash, increased noise levels, possible water pollution, and a decline in property values. The Townline Association has been instrumental in organizing opposition, encouraging residents to submit comments to the Surface Transportation Board (STB), the federal agency responsible for reviewing the proposal. They have also produced a video titled "Fight The Freight Yard" to raise awareness about the project's potential impact.
Local officials are divided on the issue. Smithtown Supervisor Edward Wehrheim supports the project, citing the impending closure of the Brookhaven Landfill in 2024 and the need for alternative waste disposal methods. Conversely, community associations such as the Fort Salonga Association and the Commack Community Association have joined the Townline Association in opposing the terminal, emphasizing the project's proximity to homes and schools.
The STB's Office of Environmental Analysis has issued a Draft Environmental Assessment for the proposed rail line, inviting public comments until February 5, 2024. The Townline Association continues to mobilize residents to voice their concerns and participate in the decision-making process.
