Patrick Vecchio, the longtime Smithtown supervisor, endorsed Democrat Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, becoming the second prominent Long Island Republican to do so Tuesday.

Vecchio cited the incumbent’s work on superstorm Sandy and the statewide property-tax cap in choosing Cuomo over Republican candidate Rob Astorino.

“I am a proud Republican, and I am also proud to endorse Gov. Andrew Cuomo for re-election,” Vecchio said in a statement released by the Cuomo campaign. “Over the last four years, Gov. Cuomo has moved Long Island forward by stopping out-of-control property tax hikes, helping us rebuild from Hurricane Sandy and stepping in to prevent the Long Island Rail Road strike. I look forward to working with the governor in his second term.”

Earlier Tuesday, Cuomo rolled out an endorsement by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, a Republican.
